The Institute has called on the Government and Opposition to focus their efforts on reforming personal tax, rather than continue to make ad hoc changes to marginal tax rate brackets in response to the political climate.
In a Policy Paper released today on Australia’s Personal Taxation System, the Institute proposed a number of reforms to streamline our current tax system, making it simpler and more equitable for taxpayers. The proposed reforms include allowing working couples to submit one family tax return, optional tax returns for ‘Pay As You Go’ (PAYG) taxpayers, reviewing the highest marginal tax rate and eliminating bracket creep.
