Your choice of degree subjects is going to determine your success or otherwise in getting your first job and your career. With hundreds of options, how can you choose?

Right now, university might seem a long way off. But you need to start planning the subjects you might take - and what your professional goals might be - early. If you’re unsure about what career attracts you, here are some clues to help you pick the right subjects at university.

Keeping your options open
If you’re unsure what your career choice will be but you want to be more focused in your subjects, a business, commerce or accounting degree is ideal.

At the heart of every business or government is its financial management. A degree in a business or financially orientated subject will open many doors.

You might decide not to be an accountant, but an accounting degree will give you a good platform for the future. Many members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants have gone on to take senior management roles - simply because an understanding of what drives business is a much valued attribute.

If you can demonstrate to a prospective employer that you have analytical and problem solving skills, and good communication, teamwork and leadership ability, it will stand you in good stead.
