An occasional series outlining where the Western Australian Council and State office have been engaging with members and raising the profile of the Chartered Accountant brand. 2007 DECEMBER 13 Merit & Completion Ceremony WA Councillors, Institute staff, firm representatives and Focus Session leaders celebrated the achievements of merit and candidate of the module recipients for Chartered Accountant Program modules between 1 October 2006 to 30 September 2007. 12 Council meeting at Burswood Council met with fellow Chartered Accountants from Burswood. 4 ASIC Lunch Around 20 members attended a presentation from the ASIC Chief Accountant, Lee White. Bill Palmer, the Institute’s Head of Standards & Public Affairs, Council and Institute staff were also in attendance. Candidate Presentations Presentations were made to new graduates at Moore Stephens and Butler Settineri on the career and professional opportunities available to Chartered Accountants along with a briefing on successfully completing the Chartered Accountants Program. NOVEMBER 14 Sharing Knowledge Series Jason Berry of KPMG delivered a Sharing Knowledge series presentation on Superannuation. 16 Council meeting at PRT Council met at PRT in Busselton and hosted a cocktail event with members from around the South West of WA. 17 Netball & Basketball Carnival 22 Netball and 13 Basketball teams participated in this sporting carnival. Congratulations to Aylmore & Associates and Gooding Pervan who won their respective divisions in Netball and BDO and Stirling Partners in Basketball. 21 Sharing Knowledge Series Ali Noroozi, the Institute’s Tax Counsel delivered a Sharing Knowledge series presentation on the Institute's lobbying efforts in the taxation arena. Ali also met with senior CAB members and Tax Public Practitioners. OCTOBER 7 Football & Touch Rugby Carnival 22 teams participated in this sporting carnival. Congratulations to Ernst & Young and BDO who won their respective divisions in Football and PricewaterhouseCoopers in Touch Rugby. 10 Women's Chartered Accountants Series More than 50 members attended 'An evening with Kate Lamont' the first session in the 2007/08 series. Thanks to Ernst & Young for their continuing sponsorship of this series. 17 AGM & 10/25/40 year celebration This function was held at The Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre and was attended by members from the WA Council and more than 100 Chartered Accountants. SEPTEMBER 12 Council meeting at Mann Judd Council met with the partners and fellow Chartered Accountants from HLB Mann Judd. 13 Business Breakfast Series The fifth business breakfast for 2007 featured a presentation by Richard Goyder, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wesfarmers. More than 300 members and guests were in attendance. 20 CFO breakfast Council, CABs panel chair and Institute management hosted a breakfast at The University Club for more than 20 CABs members who are also Chief Financial Officers. AUGUST 08 Council meeting at the University of Western Australia Council met with academics and fellow Chartered Accountants from the University of Western Australia. 11 Indoor Soccer Carnival 32 teams competed at Lords Sports Complex. Congratulations to the winning teams from PricewaterhouseCoopers, PKF and Thornton Partners. 13 Vacation Employment Evening 24 employers offered around 300 summer vacation positions to over 370 students at this event at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre. 16 Tax Phone-In - ABC Radio The Institute’s inaugural Tax Phone-In with ABC Radio saw 2 Chartered Accountants respond to caller inquiries for 30 minutes on Bernadette Young's 'afternoon' program. 28 Joint AICD / Institute Business Breakfast The fourth business breakfast for 2007 featured a presentation by Elizabeth Nosworthy, Deputy Chairman, Babcock & Brown. Around 150 members and guests from both bodies' memberships were in attendance. JULY 11 CEO visits Perth Graham Meyer met with Partners from Big 4 firms and Councillors to gain first hand knowledge on the issues, news and initiatives that are important to this member segment in WA. 13 Lunch with the Hon Julie Bishop MP The Hon Julie Bishop, Minister for Education, Science & Training and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women's Issues made an address on current economic issues at The University Club with more than 50 members attending including WA Councillors, National Board member and the Institute's Manager Government Affairs, Barbara Carney. 13 Charity Quiz Night This annual event was held at the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club with 23 teams competing. 25 Sharing Knowledge Series Andrew Stringer, the Institute’s Head of Audit delivered a Sharing Knowledge series presentation on Audit: Changes and Issues. Andrew also met with members from Commerce and Practice. 30 Tax Phone-In - The West Australian The Institute’s annual Tax Phone-In with The West Australian saw 14 Chartered Accountants responded to 300+ inquiries from the newspaper's readers. Graduate Presentations Presentations were made to graduates at McGillivray Partners and WHK Horwath on the career and professional opportunities available to Chartered Accountants along with a briefing on successfully completing the Chartered Accountants Program. An in-house presentation was also made to new candidates enrolled in TAX 207 and FIN207. JUNE 11 Cadetship evening Around 200 year 12 students from WA secondary schools attended the inaugural Chartered Accountants Cadetship Evening to meet with 12 employers offering cadetship opportunities at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre. 11 Business Breakfast Series The third business breakfast for 2007 featured a presentation by Andrew Reitzer, Chief Executive Officer, Metcash Limited. Over 120 members and guests were in attendance. 13 Council meeting at Coogee Resources Council met with the senior management and fellow Chartered Accountants from Coogee Resources. 18 Young Chartered Accountants Networking event Ernst & Young hosted a presentation by Dr Mike Nahan on Western Australia’s Housing Affordability Crisis. Over 120 young members and Chartered Accountants Program candidates attended the networking event. 18 Meet the Leader The Institute, CPA Australia and Curtin University of Technology hosted a free accounting/business careers forum entitled ‘Meet the Leader’ at Technology Park in Bentley. 180 year 10 and 11 secondary school students met with business leaders. 26 Merit & Completion Ceremony WA Councillors, Institute staff, firm representatives, Focus Session leaders, family members and candidates celebrated the achievements of merit and candidate of the module recipients for modules between December 2006 and June 2007. MAY 9-10 Business Forum More than 800 members and guests attended the 2007 Business Forum held this year at the Sheraton Perth Hotel. 16 Council meeting at Wesfarmers Council met with the senior management and fellow Chartered Accountants from Wesfarmers. 19 Indoor Cricket Carnival 18 teams participated this year and congratulations go to Ernst & Young and Sterling Accountants who won their respective divisions. 22 Business Breakfast Series The second business breakfast for 2007 featured a presentation on the Federal Budget by Professor Neville Norman. Over 370 members and guests were in attendance. 22 Women Chartered Accountants Series The fourth in this series of events was held at Ernst and Young with 70 members attending. APRIL Graduate presentations Presentations were made to 38 graduates in Perth and 7 in Bunbury on careers and professional opportunities available to Chartered Accountants along with a briefing on successfully completing the Chartered Accountants Program. University Careers Fair The Institute attended careers fairs at Murdoch, Curtin, Edith Cowan (Joondalup) and Edith Cowan (Bunbury) in April. 11 Council meeting at Mallesons Council met with the senior management and fellow Chartered Accountants from Mallesons. FEBRUARY Graduate Presentations Presentations were made to graduates at Wesfarmers, KPMG, Office of the Auditor General and PKF on the career and professional opportunities available to Chartered Accountants along with a briefing on successfully completing the Chartered Accountants Program. 14 Council meeting at KPMG Council met with partners and senior managers from KPMG. 15 Sharing Knowledge Series The first event in the series titled “Globalisation: Relevance and Simplification of Standards” was presented by Keith Reilly from the Institute’s Standards Team and was attended by 45 members. 22 Presentation of Certificates Ceremony A ceremony was held at the Perth Exhibition and Convention Centre to recognise and induct new Chartered Accountants admitted to membership in the past twelve months. Council Chairman, members of the Council and WA General Manager were in attendance. Derek Parkin FCA presented the certificates on behalf of the National President. The Hon Chief Justice Wayne Martin delivered the occasional address. Congratulations to Aylmore & Associates, PPB, Horwath and Gooding Pervan who won their respective divisions 21 Sharing Knowledge Session The sixth event in the 2006 series addressed ‘Obtaining and enforcing brand protection: tips and pitfalls’ and was presented by Richard Baddeley from Watermark and Steven Clune from Deakins. 22 Graduate Presentation A presentation was made to graduates and vacation experience students at PricewaterhouseCoopers on the career and professional opportunities available to Chartered Accountants along with a briefing on successfully completing the Chartered Accountants Program. 29 Business Breakfast Series The fourth breakfast featured Dr Mike Nahan delivered a presentation on WA’s housing boom: is it becoming the great Australian nightmare? Over 140 members and guests were in attendance. 30 Chartered Accountants in Business (CABs) Panel meeting at Synergy The CABs panel and State office met with the senior management and fellow chartered accountants in business at Synergy. OCTOBER 11 AGM & 25/40 year celebration This function was held at The University Club and was attended by members from the WA Council and more than 60 chartered accountants. 17 Firm Presentation The State office delivered a presentation to Korda Mentha illustrating the findings and outcomes of the joint WA Council/State Office 'Skills Shortage' initiative. 18 Firm Presentation The State office delivered a presentation to BM&Y illustrating the findings and outcomes of the joint WA Council/State Office 'Skills Shortage' initiative. 18 Sharing Knowledge Series The fifth event in the series addressed the new anti-money laundering legislation and was presented by Richard Thomas from Deloitte. 25 Women Chartered Accountants Series The second in the series of events was held at Ernst and Young with 62 members attending. Over 200 members and guests were in attendance. 2 Firm Presentation The State office delivered a presentation to Haines Norton illustrating the current initiatives and actions of the Institute at both a state and national level and to better understand the issues and concerns of the firm and their clients. 2 Sharing Knowledge Series The third event in the series titled “Professional Standards Act and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia Scheme” was presented by GiGi Visscher CA from Freehills. 9 Council meeting at Freehills Council and the State office met with senior management and fellow chartered accountants at Freehills. 14 Vacation Employment Evening 22 employers offered over 300 summer vacation positions to over 400 students at this event at the Burswood Convention Centre. 17 Firm Presentation The State office delivered a presentation to William Buck illustrating the current initiatives and actions of the Institute at both a state and national level and to better understand the issues and concerns of the firm and their clients. 19 Indoor Soccer Carnival This event was held at Lords Sports Complex at Subiaco with 32 teams participating. Congratulations to Ernst & Young, Stamford United and Thornton Partners who won their respective divisions. 21 Board visit to Perth The Institute’s Board met with Past State Chairs, National Presidents, members of the CABs panel and attended a cocktail function with members. 22 Board visit to Perth The President, Deputy President, Chief Executive, Council Chair, General Manager and Relationship Manager met with managing partners from public practice firms, business and community leaders to discuss the skills shortage. JULY 12 Council meeting at Chamber of Commerce & Industry Council met with the senior management and fellow chartered accountants at the Chamber of Commerce & Industry. 14 Charity Quiz Night This annual event was held at the University club with 30 teams competing. The event raised around $4,000 for Youth Focus. 19 Women Chartered Accountants Series Council met with nine women members for a networking breakfast at the University Club. 24 Firm Presentation The State office delivered a presentation to Sygnum illustrating the current initiatives and actions of the Institute at both a state and national level and to better understand the issues and concerns of the firm, partners and clients. JUNE 13 Tax Update Ali Noroozi, the Institute’s Tax counsel provided a briefing to tax practitioners on the Institute’s most recent lobbying activities, giving members an insight into the functions that the Institute’s tax team fulfils. 13 Sharing Knowledge Series More than 50 members attended the second session in the Sharing Knowledge series for 2006 titled ‘ATO Speaks’. The presentation covered Service Trusts, Division 7A, ATO compliance priorities for 2006/07, common compliance pitfalls for taxpayers and their advisors and common errors on the part of taxpayers in interpreting or applying the law. 14 Council meeting at Gooding Pervan Council and the State office met with the partners and fellow Chartered Accountants from Gooding Pervan. 20 Chartered Accountants Program Orientation Fifty new candidates commencing the Taxation 106 module attended an information and networking session. 22 Chartered Accountants in Business (CABs) Panel meeting at St John of God Healthcare The CABs panel and State office met with the senior management and fellow chartered accountants in business at St John of God Healthcare. APRIL 05 Young Chartered Accountants Committee The purpose of this breakfast was to enable Council to better understand the issues and concerns of the Institute’s younger members (and candidates) from the group representing them, along with providing the committee with an opportunity to brief Council on their current activities and initiatives. 07 Graduate Presentation A presentation was made to graduates at PricewaterhouseCoopers on the career and professional opportunities available to chartered accountants along with a briefing on successfully completing the Chartered Accountants Program. 07-08 Employment and Career Expo The Institute participated in the expo visited by over 15,000 students. 10 Employment Evening 27 Employers met with more than 350 final year accounting students seeking graduate employment at the Burswood Convention Centre. 12 Council meeting at WA Football Commission Council met with senior management and fellow Chartered Accountants from the WA Football Commission, West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Football clubs. 18 Sharing Knowledge Series The first in this series for 2006 was titled “Addressing the Needs of Business – the immigration option”. Key personnel from the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs presented this session to around 20 members. 18 Graduate Presentation A presentation was made to graduates at Gooding Pervan & PPB on the career and professional opportunities available to chartered accountants along with a briefing on successfully completing the Chartered Accountants Program. 28 Business Breakfast Series The Institute's first business breakfast for 2006 featured a presentation by Paul Skinner, Chairman of Rio Tinto Plc and Rio Tinto Limited. Over 350 members and guests were in attendance. 28 Presentation on ASIC’s Audit Inspection Program Greg LeGuier, Audit Partner with Grant Thornton presented a briefing session to chartered accountants involved in audit regarding his firm’s experience of ASIC’s Audit Inspection program. Grant Thornton became the first WA firm to be subject to the inspection process, commencing in November 2005, although only wrapping up on the actual day of the presentation when they responded to ASIC's findings report. 16 members along with Councillor Judy Vos attended the lunchtime presentation at The WA Club. MARCH 08 Council meeting at West Australian Newspapers Council met with Senior Management and fellow Chartered Accountants from West Australian Newspapers. 14 Office of the Auditor General Council and Institute management hosted a breakfast at The WA Club for Office of the Auditor General executives and senior auditors from the profession 23 Chartered Accountants in Business (CABs) Panel meeting at HBF The CABs panel met with Senior Management and fellow Chartered Accountants in Business at HBF. 26 Indoor Cricket Carnival The Cricket Carnival was held at Revolution Sports at Shenton Park with a record 22 teams participating. 2005 DECEMBER 01 Chartered Accountants in Business (CABs) Panel meeting at Alinta The CABs panel met with Senior Management and fellow Chartered Accountants in Business at Alinta. 05 Sharing Knowledge Series GiGi Visscher from Freehills gave the presentation ‘Risk Watch: Law Reform that significantly changes your business environment’ to members at the Chifley on the Terrace. 09 Members Christmas Breakfast The annual members Christmas event took place at the Sheraton Perth Hotel with John Mitchell, Coach of the Western Force. 14 Council meeting at Government Employees Superannuation Board Council met with Senior Management and fellow Chartered Accountants from the Government Employees Superannuation Board. NOVEMBER 03 Women’s Chartered Accountants Series 70 members attended a lunch at King’s Park Function Centre featuring a presentation by Fiona Harris FCA. 08 Business Breakfast The Institute's final Business Breakfast for 2005 featured a presentation by Michael Chaney, Chairman of the National Australia Bank Limited. Over 300 members and guests were in attendance. 09 Council meeting at AMD Council met with Partners and Senior Managers from AMD. Following the meeting Council also hosted a function for chartered accountants from the State’s South West . 09 Academic Update Accounting academics from Perth’s five universities attended a briefing at the Duxton Hotel by the Institute’s Technical Standards Advisor, Keith Reilly FCA. 15 Insolvency Practitioners Council and the State office hosted a breakfast with Insolvency Practitioners at the WA Club. 16 Chartered Accountants Program Merit Awards WA Councillors, Institute staff, firm representatives, Focus Session leaders, family members and candidates celebrated the achievements of candidates from 2005 Strategic Business Management, 2005 CA Foundations (1), 2005 Financial Reporting & Assurance and 2005 CA Integrative (1) at the Parmelia Hilton Hotel. 23 Presentation of Certificates Ceremony A ceremony was held at the Sheraton Perth Hotel to recognise and induct new Chartered Accountants admitted to membership in the past twelve months. The National President, Council Chairman, members of the Council and WA General Manager were in attendance. The occasional address was delivered by WA Institute Board representative, Derek Parkin FCA. 23 Institute President meets ‘Big Four’ Partners Institute National President Stuart Black, met with partners from Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers to provide an opportunity for these members to feedback on the issues of concern for them and their firms. The President also briefed members on key Institute initiatives occurring at the National level. OCTOBER 02 Football & Touch Rugby Carnival The Carnival was held at UWA Sports Park - McGillvray Ovals with 17 teams competing. Congratulations to Ernst & Young, PPB/Gooding Pervan and Chandler Macleod for winning their respective divisions. 12 AGM & 25/40 year celebration This function was held at The WA Club and was attended by members from the WA Council and more than 50 chartered accountants. 14 Charity Quiz Night This annual event was held at the University Club with 31 teams competing. The quiz night raised around $3,700 for The McCusker Foundation. 18 CA Achiever Awards The Institute hosted an Awards evening at the Melbourne Hotel to congratulate the CA Achiever winners. 29 Netball & Basketball Carnival The Carnival was held at UWA with 34 teams competing. Congratulations to Aylmore & Associates, Grant Thornton, Horwath and Australian Railroad Group (ARG) for winning their respective divisions. Congratulations to Deloitte’s, KPMG and Capital Equity who won their respective divisions. 13 Council Meeting Council met with the Partners and Senior Managers from RSM Bird Cameron. 13 Business Breakfast The Institute's second Business Breakfast for 2005 was held featuring a presentation by Don Voelte, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Woodside. 150 members and guests were in attendance with Mr Voelte's speech being widely reported in the press. 21 Council meets CABs Panel Council met with the WA CABs panel for breakfast to better understand the issues and concerns of CABs members from the group representing them, along with providing the CABs panel an opportunity to brief Council on their current activities and initiatives. 23 Tax Phone-In A Tax phone-in service was conducted by the Institute in conjunction with The West Australian to answer readers’ questions when preparing their 2005 tax return. A team of 13 chartered accountants were on-call to assist with over 300 callers between 6.00pm and 9.00pm. JUNE 08 Council meeting Council met with the University’s Governors, Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, senior academics and Chartered Accountants from Murdoch University. 14 Securities Institute of Australia The WA Council and Institute management hosted a breakfast at The WA Club with Council members from the Securities Institute. 24 Local Chambers of Commerce Business Dinner of the Year The Institute sponsored the “Leadership in Business” award at this year’s dinner held at the Burswood Resort. Congratulations to Ewen Malcolm FCA for winning the award. 27 State Chairmen’s Lunch The WA Council and Institute management hosted lunch for past State Chairmen, National Presidents and Institute life member, Sir Charles Court. MAY 04 Women CA Series The inaugural ‘Women CAs’ group event (sponsored by Ernst & Young) featuring a presentation from Rachel Green regarding ‘How to Network’, was attended by 80 women members. 11-13 CA Business Forum 700 members and guests attended the 2005 Business Forum held this year at the Sheraton Perth Hotel. 13 Federal Budget Breakfast 328 members and guests attended Professor Neville Norman’s presentation at the Sheraton Perth Hotel. 18 Council meeting Council met with Partners and Senior Managers from Pitcher Partners. 22 Indoor Cricket Carnival The Cricket Carnival was held at Revolution Sports at Shenton Park with 10 teams participating. Congratulations to Ferrier Hodgson and BM &Y who won their respective divisions. APRIL 06 Office of the Auditor General The WA Council and Institute management hosted a breakfast at The WA Club forOffice of the Auditor General executives and senior auditors from the profession. 13 Council meeting Council met with the Partners and Chartered Accountants from Clayton Utz. MARCH 03 CABs Panel meeting Chartered Accountants in Business panel members met with the senior management and fellow CAs in Business at Australian Capital Equity. 08 Council meeting Council met with the Partners and Senior Managers from PKF. 17 Business Breakfast The first of our Business Breakfast series for 2005 was held at King’s Park Function Centre featuring a presentation by the Managing Director of AWB Ltd, Mr Andrew Lindberg. 21 Employment Evening 26 Employers met with more than 400 final year accounting students seeking graduate employment at the Burswood Convention Centre. 23 CA Program Merit Awards WA Councillors, Institute staff, firm representatives, facilitators, family members and candidates celebrated the achievements of candidates from 2004 CA Foundations 1 and 2, Tax & Financial Reporting, Financial Reporting & Assurance and CA Integrative 1 and 2 at the Melbourne Hotel. FEBRUARY 09 Academic Update Accounting academics attended a breakfast at the City West Function Centre for an expert update on recent changes to the accounting, audit and assurance standards from the Institute’s Technical Advisor Keith Reilly. 10 Council meeting Councillors met with the Partners and Senior Managers from KPMG. 15 CPA Australia The annual ‘catch-up’ event was held at CPA Australia’s office for Councils and staff from both organisations. 16 Australian Institute of Company Directors The WA Council and Institute management hosted a breakfast at The WA Club with Council members from the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
