KPMG also played well earning second place and PricewaterhouseCoopers came in third. Indoor Soccer Carnival On Saturday, 2 August 2008, a record 37 teams participated in the 2008 Indoor Soccer Carnival, which was held at Lords Sports Complex.
The Premier League comprised of five teams this year, including; Newmont Asia Pacific, PKF, Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young. During the exhilarating final between Newmont Gold and PKF Premier, spectators were on the edge of their seats when the siren sounded and the score was 0-0. We knew we’d be in for an exciting finish to the day. Some very impressive penalty shootout shots ensued, and due to some excellent goalkeeping skills, the PKF Premier Team (pictured left) convincingly claimed the Premier League trophy. The amateur and social leagues were chock-full this year. With 16 teams competing in each division, the leagues were divided into two pools each. The HLB Mann Judd Amateur team, MJ United, and KPMG Amateur were at the top of their respective pool ladders and played off in the final. After a very exciting game, MJ United were victorious. The social final was played between top-of-the-ladder Mack & Co and HLB’s Social Team, MJFC, with HLB also taking home the trophy for social league. Most Valuable Player prizes were awarded to; Premier – Mark Delaurentis, PKF Premier Amateur – Jamie Rath, Taylor Woodings Bald Eagles Social – Matt Bonomi, Mack & Co Hays Accountancy & Finance sponsored the event once again, and we would like to acknowledge Todd Allen from Hays for his support on the day. Networking event – “Is it the city in your life, or your life in the city?”
On Tuesday, 29 July 2008, the Young Chartered Accountants Committee, together with KPMG, hosted a presentation and networking event for young Chartered Accountants and Candidates. Around 50 Young Chartered Accountants and candidates braved the wild weather to attend the event, where The Hon, Lord Mayor Ms Lisa Scaffidi provided an insightful presentation about the future developments of the City of Perth. She encouraged attendees to actively support the proposed new developments, including the Riverfront Project and the Northbridge Link, in an attempt to make the City of Perth more attractive to young professionals who would otherwise travel east or overseas for “the brighter lights” of other more established cities. Ms Scaffidi reminded us that it’s important to not compare apples with oranges, in relation to our more populated eastern states counterparts in Melbourne and Sydney. Ms Scaffidi also provided some very interesting and detailed residential statistics about the City of Perth. Attendees were also fortunate to hear from a surprise guest of Ms Scaffidi, Mr Edward Uhlir, who is the Director of Design at the world-renowned Millennium Park in Chicago. Mr Uhlir presented a fascinating DVD of Millennium Park, which showed how the development has quickly become the cultural hub of the city of Chicago, with its amazing combination of architecture, monumental sculpture and landscape design. At the conclusion of the presentation, attendees were invited to stay for some drinks and nibbles, allowing the opportunity to network with fellow colleagues from across Perth. Thank you to KPMG for hosting the event, and the Young Chartered Accountants Committee for their involvement and support.
Indoor Cricket Carnival

The Big 4 firms and BDO Kendalls made up A grade division this year. Ernst & Young were hoping to take home the trophy for a third year in a row, and the competition was fierce. KPMG and Ernst & Young made it through to the A grade final with KPMG defeating the reigning champs, EY Enforcers, to claim the A grade trophy with a 42-33 final score. Alistair from the EY Enforcers was awarded a prize for taking the highest number of wickets. (A grade winners KPMG) After 20 qualifying games in the biggest B grade division the Institute has seen for a while, Grant Thornton and 2007 winners Sterling Accountants occupied the top two positions on the final B grade ladder. With an impressive score of 79-36 it was Sterling Accountants' year again.
The social C grade mixed competition final was played between Great Southern C team and Deloitte C team, with a comfortable win by Deloitte of 73-65. Congratulations to Alby from Deloitte who won the award for best sportsperson, and also Helen from Great Southern for the classic catch of the day – well done! Back to top 2007 Charity Quiz Night
The Quiz night was held at the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club on Friday 13 July. Twenty-three teams took part in supporting Surf Life Saving WA, under the direction of MC and Young Chartered Accountants Committee Chairman Ben Della Vedova. Along with a fantastic pool of generously donated prizes up for grabs, a perpetual trophy was once again up for contention this year. Somehow, John’s Harem managed to once again take first prize, with KPMG’s “Bobby Dazzlers” taking home the wooden spoon trophy. Of course, the real winner on the night was Surf Life Saving WA with around $2000 being raised for this charity that provides an essential community service to all West Australians and the state’s many visitors. Back to top Young Chartered Accountants networking event – “WA’s Housing Boom, have we been left behind?” On Monday, 18 June the Young Chartered Accountants Committee, together with Ernst & Young, hosted a presentation and networking event for over 120 young members and Chartered Accountants Program candidates. Dr Mike Nahan, Chairman of the WA Housing Affordability Taskforce provided a presentation on the topic Western Australia’s Housing Affordability Crisis. The presentation cited housing affordability as the biggest threat to WA’s future prosperity, with many facts and figures highlighting the drastic changes in affordability in recent history, with the solution lying in supply rather than demand side policies. Download presentation At the conclusion of the presentation, attendees were invited to stay for drinks, allowing the opportunity to network with colleagues from across Perth.
Thank you to Ernst & Young for hosting the event. Back to top Indoor Cricket Carnival
The Institute’s Young Chartered Accountants committee, Institute staff and Michael Page International would like to thank all of those who participated in the 2007 Indoor Cricket Carnival. 18 teams participated this year, and wanting to keep everyone involved we added an extra “Social” division this year, arranging the fixtures so that A-Grade and C-Grade played in the morning and B-Grade played in the afternoon. The big 4 and two mid-tier firms shared the A grade fixtures. Ernst & Young returned to defend their title, and the competition was fierce. Deloitte and Ernst & Young finished in the equal top position on the ladder after the main competition, with Ernst & Young taking home the trophy for a second year in a row with a 44-30 final score. Aaron Basinski from Ernst & Young was also awarded a prize for taking 5 wickets in one over during the finals! (Photo above: A grade winners Ernst & Young)
After the qualifying rounds it was Gooding Pervan and 2006 finalists Sterling Accountants who occupied the top two positions on the B Grade ladder. Despite finishing top of the ladder Gooding Pervan could not keep themselves there, with Sterling Accountants beating them 40 to 21 runs in the Grand Final – so the year’s training paid off! While they may not have won the B grade title one of the Gooding Pervan players was awarded with a different prize – Pat Holiwell won the Classic Catch competition following one nomination in the earlier rounds, and a second nomination in the finals! Back to top Football & Touch Rugby Carnival
The Institute of Chartered Accountants' Young Chartered Accountants committee and UWA Sports would like to thank all those who participated in the 2007 Football & Touch Rugby carnival. The carnival was held on Sunday, 25 March – with the benefit of an extra hour’s sleep on the first day out of Daylight Saving.
KPMG, Ernst & Young and Deloitte shared the A Grade fixtures, playing one extended game of 4 x 10-minute quarters against each other prior to the finals. Ernst & Young were defending their title, and for the third consecutive year the final came down to KPMG v Ernst & Young, with KPMG reclaiming the shield 59-9. Photo top: A grade football champions KPMG Ferrier Hodgson once again made the finals of the B Grade competition, this year against PKF. Having been defeated by PKF in their earlier match, they made a fantastic comeback to reclaim the shield. Photo middle: B grade football presentation to Tom Birch, Ferrier Hodgson
Following an all-Chandler Macleod touch rugby final at the last carnival, it once again came down to a monopolised final with PricewaterhouseCoopers competing against PricewaterhouseCoopers for the shield. And the winner was…… PricewaterhouseCoopers! Most valuable player awards went to Andrew Johnson of KPMG in A Grade football, Steve Van Nierop of BDO in B Grade football and Matt Cooper of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Touch Rugby. A big thank you to Emma & Tom’s Life Juice for providing some deliciously refreshing drinks on the day!

The Young Chartered Accountants committee, UWA Sports and Hays Accountancy & Finance would like to thank all those who participated in the 2006 Institute netball and basketball carnival. Despite the much-hyped 'TomKat' wedding, the roar of the Redbull Racers practicing overhead and the previous night’s celebrations over passing the tax exam nothing was going to distract the guys and gals in the 19 netball and the 10 basketball teams taking part.
All teams were mixed, with both sports once again split into two divisions – Gold for the more serious competitors and Blue for the more relaxed players. In netball, Deloitte played a gallant game, making it into the finals of both divisions. Unfortunately for Deloitte, that was as far as they went. Aylmore & Associates (pictured above) were not ready to give up the title in the Gold division, with a 12-9 win sealing their second consecutive plaque on the trophy. In the Blue division, Gooding Pervan’s (pictured right) ‘Good Pervs’ once again made it into the finals, and this year their name will be engraved on the trophy having defeated Deloitte 6-5. Meanwhile, in the basketball, Horwath (pictured left) remain champions of the Gold division, once again defeating Ernst & Young in the finals.
The final of the Blue division came down to a match between RSM Bird Cameron vs PPB, resulting in a PPB victory. (pictured below right) Thank you to all teams who took part in the competition, and congratulations to all winning teams, as well as the MVPs in each sport as nominated by the umpires – Clinton Bainbridge from Moore Stephens Tigers in netball and Jennifer To of Ernst & Young in basketball.
A big thank you also go to those who made the day possible:- Hays Accountancy & Finance for sponsoring the event, and providing a prize for the business card draw – congratulations to Melissa Williams of Deloitte, who is now the proud owner of a portable DVD player!
- Daniel and Jade of UWA Sports for running the event on the day.
- Vanitha, Cynthea and Kim of the Young Chartered Accountants committee for lending their support on the day
- Marshall Walker of SportsMed, who thankfully did not have a lot of work to do!
Back to top The Great Debate
On Wednesday, 27 September the Young Chartered Accountants Committee hosted the inaugural 'Great Debate' at The Brass Monkey. This fun event involved a series of three debates. The first, between Curtin and UWA students, was won by the UWA students debating for the negative on the topic “Should tax be replaced by pokies and more gambling facilities?” The second debate, between two teams of Chartered Accountants “Are accountants still seen as boring bean counters, or have views changed to see us as desirable, outgoing professionals?” This debate was also won by the negative.
The final round was contested between the winning teams of the first two debates, with UWA students taking on Chartered Accountants on the topic “Lawyers have Boston Legal and Ally McBeal, doctors have House and Grey’s Anatomy, if accountants had a drama series would this encourage school leavers to join the accounting profession?” The Chartered Accountants, this time debating for the affirmative, took home the prize having provided a synopsis for an exciting, thrilling, action packed, love and passion accounting drama to encourage graduates to join the accounting profession. The drama – Accounting for lurve – involves an office romance, two rivals and an apparent murder of a fellow co-worker, beaten to death in his office with the 2004 tax act imbedded in his head with 34 pencils impaled all over his body….. who did it? All debates were undertaken in good spirit, with much fun poked at the topics, the image of accountants and the opposing teams "Swiss cheese arguments". This event was proudly sponsored by PPB and The Checkside Group. Back to top Indoor soccer challenge 2006 This year’s indoor soccer carnival took place on Saturday 19 August, with Lords Sports Centre as the venue for the day’s fixtures. The torrential rains outside didn’t manage to dampen any spirits, as the competition quickly began to heat up. Hays Accountancy & Finance was welcomed as the sponsor of this event for the fourth consecutive year. The generous prize of an iPod shuffle generated a huge response for the business card draw. Congratulations to Daniel Peixoto from Ernst & Young who walked away with this fantastic prize. The premier final saw Ernst & Young taking on PKF, finalists from the previous two years who only just made it into the competition the day before due to the late withdrawal of another team. A gruelling 12 minutes on court resulted in a 1-0 victory for Ernst & Young, who’s name will be forever engraved on the trophy as the 2006 champions. A lively competition in the amateur division resulted in a final between Stamfords United and Horwath. Stamfords United were the winners on this occasion, with a final score of 3-2. The social division saw an energetic rivalry between the teams, with Thornton Partners’ 'TP Weight Loss Program' team taking home the trophy following their convincing 3-0 win over BM&Y. Many thanks go to the other teams in this division, for their spirited attitudes. Prizes were also awarded for the ‘most valuable player’ in each division, as judged by the referees. Alex Hew from TP Weight Loss Program and Eugene Tse of KPMG each won a $20 voucher to spend at Vintage Cellars. The amatuer division saw a five-way tie, with Basil Miceli of Ferrier Hodgson’s 'Shockeroos', Brendon Farrier of BDO, Campbell Ballantyne of Team Hays, Dennis Muza of Bentleys MRI and John Khoo of PricewaterhouseCoopers each receiving a bottle of wine. As always our thanks go to Hays Accountancy & Finance for supporting the soccer carnival again this year, and to all the firms and players who took part. Special thanks to Michelle Britten and Jade Nutt from UWA Sports, for their tireless efforts behind the scenes and in assisting the Institute deliver another successful event. A number of Young Professionals committee members volunteered their time on the day - thanks to Ben Della Vedova, Kate Breadmore, Kim Tan, Sonny Rahim and Nicholas Muriale. We hope to see you all back again next year! Back to top Charity quiz night raises money for youth The Institute’s 2006 Charity quiz night was held on Friday 14 July with over 30 teams taking part and meeting the objective of 'lots of fun and lots of funds'. Along with a fantastic pool of generously donated prizes up for grabs, perpetual trophies were also in contention this year. Somehow, 'John’s Harem' managed to once again take first prize, (John Bougourd pictured right with Con Abbott, general manager WA) with Wilson & Atkinson taking home the wooden spoon trophy. Of course, the real winner on the night was Youth Focus with nearly $4000 being raised for this charity that plays a leading role in preventing youth suicide and deliberate self-harm in WA. An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the generosity of a number of Perth businesses and the Institute. The Young Chartered Accountants committee and Youth Focus would like to thank the following businesses for donating prizes: Accent Rubber Stamps & Trophies * APS Physio * AHG Driving Centre * Angus & Robertson * Asandas * Bayswater Drive-in Chemist * Bayview Day Spa * Brogues of Claremont * Burswood Entertainment Complex * Captain Cook Cruises * Cape Mentelle * C Blu Bar-Restaurant * Channel 7 * Chelsea Pizza Co * ChinaSpeak.com.au * Cooper Photography * Da Vinci Ristorante Pizzeria * Deloitte * Design Images Photography Distraction Canvas Art * Esplanade Hotel Fremantle * Fisher Photography * Flex Fitness * Flourish Magazine WA * onterra Fremantle Football Club * Fremantle Prison * Go Go’s Madras Curry House * Gooding Pervan * Greater Union * Hotel Grand Chancellor * Hyatt * Il Principe * Indoor Kart Hire * Jan de Jong Martial Arts & Fitness * Lakers Tavern * LifeCare Lords Sports Club * Muzz Buzz * Old Swan Brewery * Olde Eastbrook * Optus/Allphones * Palandri * Perth Mint * Perth Zoo * PPB * Prime Health Group * PricewaterhouseCoopers * RetraVision * RBS * Salitage * Sealanes * Siena’s * Simon’s Seafood Restaurant * Singapore Airlines * Studio Classique * Ultimo * UWA Sports * Velutto Cafe * Voyager Estate * WASO * WA Business News * West Coast Eagles * West Coast Physiotherapy * Western Force * Westrac * Whitworth’s Marine & Leisure * Willespie * Wilson Parking * Wine Education Centre. Back to top 2006 Indoor Cricket Carnival The Institute’s Young Chartered Accountants Committee, Institute staff and Michael Page International would like to thank all of those who participated in the 2006 Indoor Cricket Carnival. We faced a number of challenges this year due to the overwhelming response received - no one could have predicted there would be more than double the number of teams from last year! But with a lot of patience from our team captains (for which we thank them profusely) and a couple of late nights we managed to come up with a winning formula. The new fixtures were drawn up with B Grade playing in the morning and A Grade in the afternoon. Separating the fixtures ensured that the venue was not overcrowded and also gave those A Graders a chance to sleep in (and the B Graders time to get to a Sunday session!) With 18 teams in the B grade the venue was buzzing from an early hour. Of particular note was the change in demographic - Mack & Co entered a team with a number of female players and other teams also showcased their players of the fairer sex. It was fantastic to see the girls out there having a go, and the Institute hopes they return in force to next year’s carnival! After the qualifying rounds it was Sterling Accountants and Deloitte who sat in the top 2 positions on the B Grade ladder. Despite finishing top of the ladder Sterling Accountants could not keep themselves there, with Deloitte beating them 63 runs to 31 in the Grand Final. While they may not have won the B grade title one of their players was awarded with a different prize - Chirag Sha won the Classic Catch competition for a take in the earlier rounds, after juggling the ball 3 times! B grade winners - Deloitte. Three of the Big 4 and three mid-tier firms shared the A grade fixtures. Ferrier Hodgson returned to defend their title, but with the additional teams came a fiercer competition and it was not to be for the defending champions. PKF and Ernst & Young finished in the top 2 positions after the main competition, with Ernst & Young taking home the trophy in a close 35 to 31 run victory. A grade winners - Ernst & Young. A few more prizes were awarded to some ‘stars’ of the A grade - Jack from Ferrier Hodgson got the award for his Classic Catch, and a new award was invented due to a brilliant piece of play by Sam from Horwath (I believe it had something to do with a wide ball, the batter taking a swing anyway, someone with their leg out at the right time, and the wickets came down!) Congratulations to Sam for winning the new ‘Fluke’ award! With the competition completed for the day there was only one item left - the sponsor prize draw for a cricket bat signed by Justin Langer! Congratulations to Alice Mrazek from Mack & Co, who is now expected to return next year to demonstrate all of the practice she can put in with her new bat! Thank you to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this event happen - Simon & Sally from Michael Page International, Michelle and her team from UWA Sports, and Noddy and the crew at Revolution Sports.
