Bruce Riley FCA 22.12.1947 - 7.6.2006 Not your average Accountant; He was a special bloke as well.
Former State Chairman 1992/93 Bruce Riley will be remembered by many for his wonderful, often politically incorrect, sense of humour. With a twinkle in his eye, and looking out from under a fringe which usually needed a trim, he was a great raconteur, full of dry wit and funny stories, which left his audience doubled up with laughter. He was a true professional, passionate about The Institute, and someone who was prepared to give back to the community. Lloyd Stewart, former State Director, said “Bruce was a prodigious worker. He would regularly return to his office after a few hours sleep and, before the days of email, it was not unusual to receive a fax from him with the time of 4am on it ! Bruce will be remembered with great affection by many clients and colleagues as someone who touched their lives in a positive way.” He was also a great contributor to The Institute. He served as Chairman or member on a variety of committees including Small Practices, Small Business and Council. He was a particularly strong advocate within The Institute for small practitioners. Scrutinizing Institute activities and measuring them against his own benchmark he would often say “If we are not helping our members to be successful and make money, why are we doing it?” Bruce became a member of The Institute in 1974, and worked with Price Waterhouse and later as a partner in Barry, Chester and Hick (now Bentley's). After many years in practice, it was his abiding interest in technology that led him to work for many years in Asia. The incredible growth that has occurred in the IT sector shows that in many ways Bruce was ahead of his time. Judi Halliday, former Professional Development Manager wrote, "More than Institute folklore, it’s the legendary stories that will keep Bruce’s spirit alive in the accounting profession he was so proud of. In the 80’s when Bruce was part of the 'old boys’ footy team participating in The Institute carnival he was just about to come off the bench and was pumped up for a big game when before he had a chance to put a foot on the oval he tore a calf muscle......and spent the next fews weeks on crutches!" Bruce was extremely proud of his daughters Lisa and Angela, and young son Ryan. He passed away peacefully on 7 June, having been diagnosed with cancer a year or so earlier. He was a young 58. Bruce caught up with many old friends in his last few weeks, when we had a chance to be reminded of his spirituality, gentleness, and that infamous sense of humour. He is survived by his wife Lusi, children Lisa, Angela and Ryan, and fomer wife Cheryl. Editor's Note: Thanks to Anne Tregonning, Council Chairman 1997/98, for this account of Bruce Riley's life. Back to Top Our editor Erin caught up with Gary Walton on being a Chartered Accountant
A Chartered Accountant since 1983 Gary completed his PY whilst working for Arthur Young, during this time he had secondments in both Canada and New Zealand. Upon leaving the public practice environment, Gary worked in listed companies as CFO/COO in the biotechnology and healthcare industries. He also did his own corporate consulting for approximately four years. Deciding to take a new direction, Gary joined the Fremantle Football Club in 2002 as part of a new senior management team with the mandate to achieve best practice in all areas of the Club's off field activities. Gary, why did you choose to become a Chartered Accountant? I can remember wanting to be a bank teller when I was about 5 years old, so I guess the accountant thing has always been in me. When I went through University, it was obvious the Chartered Accountant qualification was the highest and hardest to achieve and offered the chance to get the best training and experience. What has been the highlight of your career so far? There have probably been three highlights – the day the biotechnology company I worked at for nearly 11 years reached a market cap of A$1 billion; doing my own corporate consulting; and playing a part in ensuring that Fremantle Football Club not only continued in the AFL competition but was a solid contributor to football in WA. Do you like to set yourself career and personal goals to keep yourself motivated? I have constantly worked in development industries or situations that were in start up mode or required turn around. The motivation has been to ensure doing the job properly which resulted in a positive outcome. Have you had any particular mentor in your career or had any advice that has stuck in your mind? I have worked with some terrific CEO’s who have been risk takers and very creative, but follow a well thought out plan. These include Glen Travers, Dr Garry Garside and in more recent times, Cameron Schwab. My style has always been complementary to their styles. From an accounting viewpoint, Frank Cooper and Mel Ashton have been invaluable in their ability to see the bigger picture. What advice would you give to a young accounting graduate today? Do your Chartered Accountant program and get the best training possible. Be loyal and honest to the people that help you and more often than not you will be rewarded by those people in many different ways. WA Council – Your Representatives The Council is the representative body of Chartered Accountants in WA and as such is the peak body for members in the state. Councillors are elected by the members to serve their interests. The principal roles of the WA Council are to provide advice to the Institute’s National board on strategic policy and member issues, including acting as a link between the board and members in WA, assisting in public profiling and liaison with the State Government and carrying out such functions as may be delegated to Council by the board. Can you bend it like Beckham? OK so it's not the World Cup but teams can step up to the mark if they wish - it's time for the Institute's annual Soccer Challenge! The Premier league is recommended for those hard core soccer enthusiasts, however, there are also Amateur and Social divisions for teams who just want to get out there and have a bit of fun. And speaking of fun, there will be a bbq and drinks provided for players and spectators from about 5:00pm - after the main competition and during (and after) the finals. This year's event is to be held on the afternoon of Saturday 12 August, at Lords Sports Centre in Subiaco. Registration Form I guess there is only one more thing to say - olay, olay, olay, olay! Rewarding our young members - President's Prize 2006 Call for nominations Do you know of a Chartered Accountant under the age of 35 that has made a significant contribution to our industry? Then tell us about them! The Institute is calling on nominations for this year’s President’s Prize. The prestigious award, which offers $1000.00 in prize money, acknowledges the valuable input that young CAs have made to the profession over a 12-month period. As Neil Faulkner, current Institute President, explains, the award offers far more than a $1000 purse. “The President’s Prize is not just a reward for the recipient, but also an incentive to encourage other young Chartered Accountants to become more involved with the Institute. It is not an academic prize, but a symbol of recognition for their service to the profession,” “Faulkner said. Since its introduction in 1996 by the former President David Smithers, nine Chartered Accountants have been awarded the prestigious prize, including 2005 recipient Jane Stanton CA. “We encourage members to recognise such outstanding contributions for young Chartered Accountants by participating in the award”. Entries are due Wednesday, 30 August 2006 Nominees must be a chartered accountant, under the age of 35 and have made a significant contribution to the Institute during the past 12 months.
