The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (the Institute) today welcomed the announcement by the Assistant Treasurer, Chris Bowen MP, of the appointment of Mr Ali Noroozi to the role of Inspector-General of Taxation, effective November 6, 2008.

Mr Noroozi’s appointment follows his role as Tax Counsel for the Institute.

“Although we are sad to be losing such great technical and professional expertise and a key member of our tax team, we congratulate Ali wholeheartedly on his new appointment, which is testament to his achievements here at the Institute,” said Institute Chief Executive Officer Graham Meyer.

During his nearly five-year tenure at the Institute, Ali led the continuing development of the Institute’s taxation policy and was actively involved in advocating these policies to the Government and its agencies, while communicating important changes to the Institute’s members.

“Ali’s great asset is his ability not only to influence positive change to Australia’s tax system, but also to ensure that the public interest is always top of mind. His balanced, measured, and determined approach to tax issues will serve him well in his new role, which will focus on the improvement of the administration of tax laws for the benefit of all taxpayers,” said Mr Meyer.

Mr Noroozi, a qualified engineer and lawyer, joined the Institute in February 2004 having had more than 12 years’ experience in private practice in Australia and overseas, including key roles with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young and within major law practices including Minter Ellison and Linklaters.
