Macquarie’s CEO announced as number one business leader

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia is proud to announce Allan Moss AO, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Macquarie Bank as the winner of its annual Chartered Accountants Business Leader Award.  
 
Moss was revealed to be the number one business leader at the Institute’s annual black-tie awards tonight, as attended by many of Australia’s leading business identities.  
 
Macquarie Bank scooped the pool at this year’s awards with Nick Moore FCA and Executive Director of Macquarie’s Investment Banking Group, winning the coveted Outstanding Chartered Accountant in Business Award.  
 
In receiving the overall Business Leader Award Allan Moss has demonstrated excellence in translating vision into reality, exhibiting best practice, fostering good employee relations and leading by example in the arenas of social and corporate responsibility.  
 
Moss has been the CEO of Macquarie since 1993, during which time he has overseen a phenomenal increase in the bank’s net profit from $60 million to $823 million. The company has also grown in human capital, increasing staff numbers from only 1,400 to over 8,000, whilst simultaneously achieving one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry. Since listing on the ASX in 1996 under Moss, Macquarie shareholders have seen total returns in excess of 1,300%.  
 
Moss joined Macquarie Bank in 1977 (when it was Hill Samuel merchant bank), as a law and arts/economics graduate of Sydney University and an MBA graduate from Harvard Business School. Last year, Mr Moss was appointed an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia.  
 
Receiving the award, Allan Moss said he was honoured to be chosen as the 2005 business leader, particularly from such an impressive field of nominees.  
 
Mr Moss said: " This award is a recognition of the contribution which the entire Macquarie Bank team has made to the Australian community. We feel very honoured.”  
 
Moss praised awards such as the Chartered Accountants Business Leader Award, for presenting an opportunity to celebrate those who have excelled across all spectrums of business.  
 
Previous winners of the Business Leader Award include: Malcolm Broomhead, CEO of Orica, Michael Chaney AO, MD and CEO of Wesfarmers, Paul Little, Managing Director, Toll Group, Wal King AM, CEO and Group Managing Director, Leighton Holdings and Paul Anderson, former CEO and Managing Director, BHP Billiton.
