The Institute, in association with KPMG, developed a survey in 2007 to examine the balance between a CFO's stewardship role with their strategy development and value adding functions in order to meet the expectations of CEOs, boards and stakeholders.

Results of the survey revealed that the role of the CFO (and his/her finance team) has expanded and that the business generally has become used to the finance function taking a more proactive role across a range of important matters.

Other key trends from the survey included:

  • As companies put growth and performance improvement back on top of the agenda, CFOs and their finance teams are experiencing greater involvement in strategic and commercial work and in market and stakeholder communication
  •
  • Most CFOs do not expect any substantial change in the balance of their responsibilities and business priorities over the next three years
  •
  • To some extent the emphasis on regulatory compliance tasks has reduced the finance team’s ability to add value in other areas of the business
  •
  • The shortage of finance and accounting talent is intensifying. The pressing need to attract and retain good people is placing new demands on CFOs’ leadership and people management skills.
