This list of frequently asked questions and answers is provided to assist you in your application to the Institute. It is important however that you read the relevant by-laws, regulations and any associated information before you submit your application. 
 
 
What kind of qualifications do I need? 
 
You would need to hold a Doctorate or Masters by research degree with a major in an accounting related field from an Institute approved higher education provider. 
 
 
What happens if I am unable to provide references from two Australian Chartered Accountant’s? 
 
Your application will need to be supported by two current members of the Institute (Regulation 209.4). If you are unable to supply these references it is unlikely that your application will be approved. 
 
 
What position do I need to hold at a tertiary institution? 
 
You need to hold, both at the time of application and also when the application is considered by the Institute,  
 
a) a position as a full-time teacher in a faculty offering a course approved by the Institute for graduates who are seeking admission to the Chartered Accountants Program, of a lecturer or a position of higher standing 
 
and 
 
b) need to have held this position at one or more approved higher education providers for not less than five (5) years. 
 
 
Why are interviews sometimes conducted? 
 
If your application is a special case, or if management or the General Manager of the Chartered Accountants & Admissions Division believes that it is necessary, brief interviews can be conducted either at your local regional office or if this is not possible via telephone. The interview is generally conducted by members representing the General Manager of the Chartered Accountants Program & Admission Division and enables a better understanding of the applicant’s situation and experience to be determined. 
 
 
How much should I pay and when? 
 
The application fee is payable at the time of application. The appropriate pro rata subscription amount will be sought from you if your application is successful.  
 
 
What happens if my application is not successful? 
 
You will receive confirmation in writing of the outcome of your application and fees paid towards the application will be refunded less an administration fee. 
 
 
What details of my tertiary qualifications are required? 
 
You will need to supply either a certified copy of your certificate or a certified copy of an academic transcript that indicates that all requirements for the award of the degree have been met. A certified copy of your academic transcript showing your results for accredited subjects in Australian Taxation Law and Australian Corporations Law must also be supplied.  
 
 
What happens if I cannot comply with all the regulations? 
 
The application can still be made. However, such applications would need to be considered as special cases. 
 
 
What does it mean if my application is a special case? 
 
Your application does not comply with all the required regulations. Under these circumstances you are likely to be required to attend an interview. Additional documentation in support of your application will also be required (e.g. alternative references). All special case applications are fully reviewed by the General Manager of the Chartered Accountants Program & Admissions Division and the Board of the Institute. 
 
 
What happens after I have applied? 
 
Your application will be processed at the National Office. If further information is required the Institute will contact you. By Law 12 applications need to be assessed by General Manager of the Chartered Accountants Program & Admissions Division and the Board of the Institute. 
 
 
How long does the application process take? 
 
A standard application should be processed within 2-3 weeks. Special cases will take longer as more consideration is required, and potentially an interview.
