As a graduate of the Chartered Accountants Program (or the PY prior to 2001) you can apply for membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia if you have also completed the practical experience requirements and have suitable references as outlined below.

The online application is available in the secure area of the Institute's website under My Subscriptions > Membership Application. If you wish to apply online, you will need to read carefully the Application Guide (pdf, 149KB) and Regulations before commencing the application process. A paper application form and FAQ are available below.

Practical Experience for Membership

The requirements are:

  • At least three (3) years full-time equivalent experience mentored by a Chartered Accountant in public practice or in an organisation approved by the Institute;
    or
  • A total of 5 years of experience with at least three (3) years of general, relevant accounting experience as defined in the Chartered Accountants Program Regulations relating to prerequisite experience, and, at least two (2) years full-time equivalent experience mentored by a Chartered Accountant in public practice or in an organisation approved by the Institute.
References

Please remember that you cannot nominate the same person for both references.
  • A member of the Institute with at least three (3) years membership who is not related to you; and
  • Present or most recent employer, holding the position of Partner/GM/CEO/Executive of the organisation.
If submitting a paper application, references must be dated within three months of the application date. Each referee will be contacted to confirm their support of your application so it is important that you discuss your inclusion of their contact details with them.

Fees
When you lodge your application you pay an application fee and a pro-rata subscription fee.

The application fee is $300 if you apply within 3 months of becoming eligible (ie within 3 months of completing both the GradDipCA and practical experience requirements). If you apply more than three months after becoming eligible, the application fee is $500.

Please note you will be charged the pro-rata subscription rate according to the month you apply. Only in cases where approval of an application exceeds 30 days will the fee be charged from the approval date.

Late Application
If you submit your application more than one (1) year after completion of the Chartered Accountants Program/PY, you must provide details of Training & Development completed during the intervening period and you may be required to attend a personal interview.

The Procedure
You are notified in writing if your application is accepted and a new member's information pack is sent to you. Certificates of Membership are usually presented at special New Member events held throughout the year in each state or you can contact the Institute and ask for your certificate to be sent to you.
