Learning resources

The Chartered Accountants Program uses a wide range of print and online resources to assist you during the course of your studies.

Resources provided by the Institute include:

Learning & Assessment Guide
At the commencement of the Program we issue you with a copy of the Learning & Assessment Guide (LAG). The LAG contains detailed information on the following:
> Program content
> Learning strategies
> Teamwork
> Assessment
> Focus sessions
> Extension projects/assignment
> Examinations
> Preparing for examinations
> Information technology.

We provide the LAG on CD ROM to all candidates enrolling in the Program for the first
time. You can also download the LAG from myCA. Link to myCA

Candidate Learning Pack
We issue you with one main print resource for each module, the Candidate Learning Pack (CLP). There is a CLP for each of the modules in the Program. Each CLP consists of an Overview, a minimum of four learning units and the ‘Planning your study’ guide. You can also access the CLP on myCA on module commencement date.
The Overview covers information specific to the module in which you are currently enrolled. It contains information on critical dates (i.e. extension project (EP) submission date, examination date), instructions on how to download EPs, as well as the learning outcomes for the module.
Each learning unit addresses a main topic area, with activities designed to achieve the competency levels specified in the learning outcomes. The CLP is your primary print resource and contains reference to all of the materials on which you will be assessed. It is not, however, a ‘one-stop-shop’, as the module also incorporates a number of electronic learning resources. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have access to these and utilise them. You may also wish to conduct external research (i.e. internet, journal articles, etc.) to help fill any knowledge gaps you may have identified. The Planning your study guide provides information and tools to assist you in studying for the Program assessments.

Members’ Handbook
It will be necessary for you to access the Institute Members’ Handbook for all modules in the chartered accountants program. The Handbook can be accessed via our website. You will need to log in to the restricted area to access this publication.
The Members’ Handbook contains:
> a full set of Australian Accounting Standards and Auditing Practice Statements
> Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants
> Charter and By-laws
> Miscellaneous Professional Statements
> Points of Professional Practice
> Admission regulations.

You are required to access this information throughout the Program in order to complete

the activities, extension projects and examinations.

Other Institute publications
You can access the Institute’s journal, Charter, via our website <www.charteredaccountants.com.au>. You will need to log in to the restricted area to access this publication.
Charter provides up-to-date technical information and general information about Institute activities and the Program. Some articles may be used in activities in the Program.
Other Institute publications, such as Accounting and Auditing News Today (ANT), Tax Bulletin and e-bulletin are used from time to time, and these are also available on the website.

Institute Knowledge Centre
One of your most valuable resources will be the Institute Knowledge Centre.  The Knowledge Centre is situated on Level 2, 33 Erskine Street in Sydney.
If you have difficulty coming to the Knowledge Centre, material can be posted to you. Up to 4 items (books/DVDs/Cds) can be borrowed and posted to your home or work whether you live in Sydney or interstate.
In addition, the library can email articles/information to you.
The phone number for the library is  (02) 9290 5680    /  1800 809 828
Email: library@icaa.org.au
Fax: (02) 9299 1689

You can access the catalogue of the Institute’s Knowledge Center via our website www.charteredaccountants.com.au The catalogue has over 25,000 references to Australian journals covering tax, accounting, auditing, superannuation and related topics. For some modules, the library provides a reading file containing referenced material. This file only contains material not readily available on the internet. A copy of it is located in each of our regional offices.
In addition to the Institute library your local library may be of assistance.

myCA
This web-based learning resource and method of communication is used throughout the Program.

The myCA online learning platform provides a range of online and electronic resources to assist your study, as well as an excellent means of networking with your learning peers at any time during the module.

The Announcements page on myCA is our main tool for communicating with you throughout the module. It will advise you of availability of teams, focus sessions and examination details, important timetable dates, extension project information, and changes to regulations.

The peer support board in each module is a valuable resource that enables you to post queries, share solutions, give and receive feedback, and generally assist your fellow candidates throughout the Program.

myCAportfolio
This is a web-based resource for recording your achievements and reflections on experiences relevant to developing the attributes required of Chartered Accountants and to the Program. These achievements and experiences can also relate to your workplace or social interactions. We strongly recommend that you maintain and update this record.
We make access to myCAportfolio available to candidates at the commencement of their first module in the Program. It continues to be available throughout the Program and into your membership.

Mentors
A mentor accepts responsibility for your guidance and counselling during the Program and the qualifying service period. The mentor’s role is to add value to you during the period of practical experience by sharing and imparting knowledge, skills and experience, and reporting on your attainment of practical experience in accordance with the Institute’s requirements.
This is achieved by:

  • assisting you to achieve the desired objectives of the Program
  • acting as a guide, coach and role model
  • meeting regularly with you to review experience gained and set objectives for the next period
  • verifying the record of practical experience, and signing off on the attainment of CA competencies.

Focus sessions
Focus sessions provide great opportunities to extend your knowledge and skills, gain feedback on your progress, and engage with your learning peers.
Focus sessions allow face-to-face interaction with your learning colleagues and experienced accounting professionals. They also provide opportunities for you to receive feedback and/or coaching from your focus session leaders (where applicable).
Most importantly, focus sessions provide you the opportunity to escape the confines of independent learning and engage with other learners. It is a very rare individual who can learn effectively in isolation. Most of us need to share our learning with others, take the opportunity to consider different approaches and perspectives, and participate in discussion and debate. The opportunity for such interaction also tends to increase our motivation and enjoyment of the learning process.

Other learning resources
Throughout the Program, you have access to a range of other resources to assist you with your learning. These include:

  • past exam questions with solutions and examiners’ feedback
  • exam preparation questions
  • activity feedback

Also, throughout each module you will have contact with many people in a variety of ways. You will:

  • Work with peers in formal teams and informal study groups
  • Interact with workplace colleagues
  • Ask questions on myCA to which other candidates and the Program team can respond
  • Share thoughts and ideas with other candidates on myCA
  • Receive 12 hours of face-to-face contact with experienced, qualified Chartered Accountant focus session leaders
  • Interact with up to 20 of your peers during focus sessions
  • Contact your regional Program Coordinator with relevant administrative queries.

All these interactions provide learning opportunities with the other members of your learning team.
