What happens next?

You may apply for special consideration if you believe that circumstances beyond your control occurred, and have negatively affected your performance in an assessment item(s).

If you do apply, you will have your circumstances assessed by the special consideration sub-committee of the Chartered Accountants Program & Admissions Committee (CAPAC). CAPAC is entrusted with the responsibility of upholding standards of entry to membership and therefore needs to be confident that potential members of the Institute achieve the required minimum competency standard for each module and the Chartered Accountants Program as a whole.

The special consideration sub-committee meets after each examination and prior to result release, to consider all special consideration applications. All applications are assessed at this time, irrespective of the assessment item for which special consideration is being requested. In applying for special consideration, you should note that each request is assessed individually on its merits. You should make no assumptions as to the outcome of your application. Applications received after the cut-off date will not be considered.

An application for special consideration may be made on medical and/or non-medical grounds, as outlined below.

Application on medical grounds

To apply for Special Consideration on medical grounds, candidates must complete the Application for Special Consideration(pdf 36KB) form and have their medical practitioner complete and sign the Medical Certificate to Support Application for Special Consideration (pdf 36KB). The Institute may contact the medical practice named to verify its authenticity.

In applying for special consideration on medical grounds, candidates should be aware that illnesses that are part of everyday life (e.g. light coughs and colds, temporary light headaches, etc.) are unlikely to be favourably considered by the sub-committee.

Application on non-medical grounds

To apply for Special Consideration on non-medical grounds, candidates must complete the Application for Special Consideration (pdf, 42KB) form and complete and sign the Non-Medical Certificate to Support Application for Special Consideration (pdf, 42KB). Applications should be supported by relevant documentation, e.g., death notices, etc.

In applying for special consideration on non-medical grounds, you should be aware that circumstances that are part of everyday life (e.g. long working hours, weddings, holidays, family reunions, moving house, etc.) or which were known of at the time of enrolment in the module are unlikely to be favourably considered by the sub-committee.

Submission of special consideration forms

If you wish to apply for special consideration, you are required to complete the relevant documentation as outlined above using the forms provided. Requests for special consideration can be lodged with the Institute at any time during the module and no later than 14 days after the examination. Requests received after this time will not be considered. Completed application forms for special consideration are to be mailed or faxed to:

What happens next?

When a candidate’s special consideration application is being presented to the Special Consideration sub-Committee, the candidate’s history is made available to the members of the Committee. This history may include, but is not limited to:

  • the performance of the candidate in each assessment item of the module for which special consideration is being requested
  •
  • statement(s) provided by the candidate in their application for special consideration
  •
  • results of subjects studied prior to enrolling in the GradDipCA
  •
  • results achieved in previous modules, broken down into each assessment component
  •
  • previous applications for special consideration made by the candidate and the outcome of each application
It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that all supporting documentation is included with their application for special consideration, as the Special Consideration sub-Committee is unable to contact third parties to verify or discuss a candidate’s circumstances due to the privacy legislation. However, the Special Consideration sub-Committee or members of the Chartered Accountants Program Assessment team may contact third parties referred to in a candidate’s application to verify their existence, bona-fides and relationship to the candidate. Candidates who are found to have made false representations to the special consideration sub-committee will be subject to disciplinary action.

In applying for special consideration, candidates should note that each request is assessed individually. Candidates should make no assumptions as to the outcome of their application.
