  • The English Channel is about 35 kilometres wide at its narrowest point
  • Swimmers who attempt to cross the Channel must contend with more than 600 commercial ship movements per day, as well as about 80 to 100 ferry crossings
  • The success rate is about 50 per cent for solo swims. Unpredictable wind and weather conditions, strong tides and busy ship traffic are challenges that contribute to the difficulty of this open water swim
  • Up to 2005, 675 individuals had made 982 successful crossings of the Channel.
