  • Mt Everest’s summit is 8,848 metres above sea level 
  • By the end of the 2007 climbing season, 2,436 individuals had made 3,679 ascents to the summit
  •  
  • There are two main climbing routes to the summit, as well as many other less frequently used routes
  • Most attempts are made during May, due to the favourable weather conditions which reduce wind speeds on the mountain 
  • Successful climbers typically spend less than half an hour on the summit, in order to make the return climb before sunset, beat poor weather in the afternoons or conserve their oxygen supplies.
