Industry landscape - setting the scene

This session will take you through the current industry landscape and any impeding changes covering:

  • Industry status – profitability, industry consolidation
  • Proposed federal changes (not for profits legislation, mandatory pre-commitment, carbon tax)
  • State laws and regulations of clubs, Registered Clubs Act & other related acts
  • Trends in regulation e.g. social impact studies
  • Strategic direction of clubs.
Accounting issues impacting industry

This session will take you through the specific accounting issues to be aware of including:

  • Accounting for gaming machines
  • Key accounting standards
  • Grants of additional machines
  • Recognition of licences for gaming machines.
Audit issues impacting industry

Auditing a registered club poses difficult risk assessments. This session will cover:

  • Key audit standards
  • Auditing gaming revenue and licences.
Tax implications for industry

The relevance of various tax issues will be explained in this session including:

  • Mutuality guidance for registered and licensed clubs
  • Eligibility of clubs for sporting club or charitable exemptions
  • Particular GST, FBT and entertainment and land tax issues that can affect licensed and Registered Clubs
  • Taxation issues with club amalgamations including capital gains tax and acquisition & disposal of plant
  • Proposed tax implications to clubs of the new taxations laws regarding the taxation of unrelated commercial activities of charities and not for profit entities.

    Peter is a Director of Lawler Partners and a senior member of the Lawler Hospitality, Gaming and Marketing team (HGM). With over 30 years experience in the hospitality & gaming industry, he is an acknowledged expert in the area of Registered Clubs. Peter was a co presenter of the Club GST Ready Program and co-authored the Club GST Manual. He specialises in providing professional advice and service to the hospitality industry including clubs, particularly in the areas of Corporate Governance, Operational Issues, Strategic Planning, Amalgamations & Takeovers, Due Diligence, Taxation, Financial Reviews and Management Accounting.

    Clayton is a Partner of Lawler Partners and leads their audit and assurance practice. He is responsible for the maintenance of the audit methodology at Lawler partners and its alliance firms. Clayton has 14 years experience in audit, and has provided services to both major multinational companies and the SME markets as a result of experience in both a Big 4 and mid tier environment. He is currently responsible for an audit portfolio across a range of industry sectors including but not limited to Registered Clubs and not for profits.
