Institute launches book: Review of Australia’s Future Tax System

Key Points

  • The Institute has sponsored a book about Australia’s Future Tax System for members to purchase
  • The Thomson Reuters publication is a compilation of essays and analysis from presenters at the Institute’s post-Henry Tax Review conference in June
  • The information will serve as useful commentary in the lead-up to the government’s tax summit in early 2011.

Following its highly successful international academic tax policy conference, Australia’s Tax System: a Post-Henry Review in June 2010, the Institute has sponsored a book containing the conference’s papers and commentary. The book has been edited by leading tax policy academics from the University of New South Wales and Monash University.

The Thomson Reuters publication, Australia’s Future Tax System: the Prospects after Henry, compiles the ideas and thoughts of a number of leading tax policy academics from Australia and overseas who presented at the conference. Contributors include Professor Alan Auerbach from the University of California, Professor Jack Mintz from the University of Calgary and Professor Jon Kesselman from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver.

Yasser El-Ansary, the Institute’s tax counsel, believes the book is an unrivalled resource.

‘You are being offered a unique opportunity to hear from some of the world’s leaders about the future direction of Australia’s tax system, and what they think about the recommendations contained in the Henry Tax Review,’ he said.

Tax reform

Mr El-Ansary said tax reform is an ongoing issue on the Australian public agenda.

‘The Henry Tax Review offered short-term and long-term recommendations that, if implemented, will significantly overhaul the Australian tax system. To date, the government has not really come to a firm landing on precisely how much of the Henry Review will be implemented,’ Mr El-Ansary said.

Debate about the opportunities and challenges the government faces in tax reform continue to take place and are set to climax at the government’s proposed tax summit in early 2011.

‘In light of the government’s upcoming tax summit, this book release is timely in highlighting the potential for future tax reform in Australia,’ Mr El-Ansary said.
