Treasury roundtable on the Tax Studies Institute
On 14 December 2011, the Institute’s Tax Counsel, Yasser El-Ansary, attended a Treasury roundtable discussion in relation to the proposed new Tax Studies Institute. Members may recall that as part of the key actions from the October Tax Forum, the Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, the Hon Wayne Swan MP, announced that the government will contribute $1m a year over three years to establish an independent tax policy research centre to progress ideas for tax policy reform in the future.
Some of the key issues discussed at the roundtable meeting included the potential role of the Tax Studies Institute, the corporate structure of the organisation, engagement with the academic community and professional bodies, and the ongoing funding arrangements.
Treasury will meet again with the roundtable participants in early 2012 to progress thinking about the design and structure of the new institute.
