Clean Energy Bill passed by House of Reps
On 12 October 2011, the Clean Energy Bill and related Bills were passed by the House of Representatives (with a number of non-tax related amendments) and now move to the Senate.
The Bills were introduced into the House on 13 September 2011. Subsequently, the Joint Select Committee on Australia's Clean Energy Future Legislation was established to inquire into and report on the provisions of these Bills.
On Friday 7 October 2011, the Joint Select Committee tabled its report out of session, recommending that the Bills be passed. The report also made a number of specific recommendations, including that the government intensify its efforts to promote awareness and understanding of the mechanism.
Meanwhile, the Senate Select Committee on the Scrutiny of New Taxes released its interim report on the carbon tax, recommending that the legislation should be opposed and defeated in the Parliament. A dissenting report was released by Government Senators on the Committee and additional comments were made by Senator Nick Xenophon.
