CA SMSF Specialisation

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia has announced the launch of a new CA SMSF specialisation program.
Following feedback and input from our members and the Institute’s SMSF Committee, we are proud to introduce our new SMSF specialisation program, which is available exclusively to Chartered Accountants.

In 2010, the Cooper Review acknowledged that the professional accounting bodies were best placed to ensure high levels of competency for accountants and administrators. With Chartered Accountants making up one of the largest groups of service providers in the SMSF industry, we are a natural choice to provide a high-quality specialist program, to build on our members' existing skills and expertise.

The Institute is strongly committed to contributing to the advancement of the SMSF advisor profession and members who work in this industry. Chartered Accountants are already the trusted advisors to many SMSF trustees; a specialist program will allow members to build on that trust with a formal recognition by their professional association of their knowledge, skills and experience in SMSFs.

More and more Australians are opting for SMSFs as their retirement savings vehicle of choice so the demand for high quality advisors will no doubt grow. A formal, Institute-recognised specialisation enables Chartered Accountants to enhance their own abilities, and will ensure SMSF trustees have access to quality advice from a trusted source.

The specialisation was officially launched by our Head of Superannuation, Liz Westover, at the National SMSF Conference in Melbourne on Monday 19 September.

The program offers a workshop and assessment component for those with at least four years of practical SMSF experience, or a post-graduate program for those with at least two years of SMSF experience. Both elements are run through the University of New South Wales.
