What does the GradDipCA cover?
Course Information.

The Chartered Accountants Program is the postgraduate accounting program of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. The two components of the Chartered Accountants Program are the GradDipCA and Practical Experience Program. On completion of the Chartered Accountants Program, candidates can apply to become a member of the Institute.

There are five modules in the GradDipCA; four technical and a final integrative module.
Candidates undertake these modules while working. This means they can gain the full benefits from combining their study with work experience allowing them to draw on the world of work to support their learning.

Uniquely among professional accounting bodies, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia is an accredited higher education provider which means that the Chartered Accountants Program will earn candidates a Graduate Diploma of Chartered Accounting – a qualification which can be used to gain exemptions to over 60 Masters degrees offered by universities around Australia.

What are the competencies and learning outcomes?

The combination of a university education, GradDipCA and Practical Experience Program is designed to equip graduates of the Chartered Accountants Program with the knowledge, skills and values that have been identified as being the essential competencies of a Chartered Accountant.

The GradDipCA’s curriculum is built around the competencies that employers say they need in a graduate; technically competent, understanding all the core components of accounting, able to communicate at different levels and have business report writing skills. The competencies also match the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) educational standards for entry to the profession. The learning outcomes in each module syllabus are derived from the overarching competencies.

How is the GradDipCA delivered?

The modules use a blended approach to learning, combining self-directed, learning materials with 12 hours of face-to-face classes per module. The classes take the form of four focus sessions, led by a Chartered Accountant and cover key content areas.

Before the module begins, candidates receive a comprehensive self-study learning pack that contains all the material candidates need to work through including activities and examples, so that candidates can practice new skills and get feedback as well as enabling them to prepare for exams.

Throughout the module, candidates will also have the opportunity to participate in discussion in an online environment, myCA. This portal is the main channel of communication between candidates, focus session leaders and the Institute.

The GradDipCA emphasises an applied rather than a theoretical approach to learning with opportunities for candidates to apply their knowledge through a range of learning activities.

Each module runs for approximately 14 weeks.
