On 5 July 2009, the Institute's CEO, Graham Meyer joined the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) to sign a memorandum of understanding at a conference held in Agra, home of the Taj Mahal.

The agreement includes the mutual recognition of accounting qualifications. As a result, our members will be eligible to apply for membership of the ICAI and vice versa (subject to completion of an additional country-specific module and meeting any statutory requirements).

Chartered Accountants in Australia and India can now take advantage of an increased mobility of their qualification, opening the door to numerous professional opportunities.

To apply for membership of the Institute, ICAI members are required to:

  • Be a current ICAI member in good standing; and
  • Hold a degree assessed by the Australian National Office of Overseas Recognition as equivalent to at least an Australian Bachelor degree; and
  • Pass the final module of the Chartered Accountants Program, Ethics and Business Application, within 2 years of first enrolment.

The practical experience that ICAI members have gained to qualify for their ICAI membership is recognised as equivalent to that required for membership of the Institute.

After successfully completing Ethics and Business Application, ICAI members can make an application to be admitted as a member of the Institute under ByLaw 12.

Although these ICAI members will be eligible to apply for membership to the Institute, they will not receive reciprocal membership rights with the GAA member nations as they have not completed all modules of the Institute's Chartered Accountants Program. These members will however be able to access the same level of professional support and member benefits in GAA countries enjoyed by all Institute members.
