Completing a vacation placement shows recruiters that you’ve got the initiative and motivation to get yourself organised. It’s also an indication that you’re likely to have developed a range of useful skills.
It is a great opportunity to learn how organisations work. You get to learn more about the jobs and industries that interest you in your career. And more importantly you can make useful contacts.
Once you are offered work experience, make the most of it. Be clear about all the details – the location, dates and times, who is responsible for you, what to wear and whether or not you are paid.
It is important that you aim to get all you can from your time at the organisation. It will look much better if you are able to demonstrate skills which you have learnt and accomplishments you have achieved during your experience, rather than simply stating that you spent time at a particular work place.
Dress accordingly
The aim of work experience should be to test to what extent you fit into the work environment and whether you could be happy as a permanent member of a similar team. Dressing inappropriately will determine your lack of suitability for the company.
Make a good impression
If someone looks like they may be under pressure and you currently have nothing to do, offer to assist them. Even if they have nothing for you to do, they will appreciate you asking and may keep you in mind when another project arises.
Attempt to include yourself on a wide array of projects
In order to get an adequate taste of the job, it is important that you experience as many of the different components of the occupation that you can. There is no point putting more effort into those things you enjoy at the expense of those you are unwilling to put your hand to.
Ask for feedback
Whenever possible, you should discuss with those you are assisting if there was anything you could have done to improve your work. Without feedback it will be difficult to come away from the experience with new attributes.
Contribute your ideas
What you get out of your experience depends on what you put in. Remember, they are giving you an opportunity, their time and resources – so respect it. Do not act bored. Every job has its mundane tasks. If you do not understand something, ask. If you are not enjoying your placement or you are experiencing any sort of problem, then speak with your supervisor or mentor.
Ask for a reference or written assessment from your employer
Even if you can’t see yourself using a reference in the near future you are bound to want it at some point. It is easier to get it now than months or years down the track.
